You may be the kind who prefers to sew a new garment to mending or altering, but you must admit that those skills are necessary even in today's world of ready made clothing. How did you decide to make a web site about clothing alterations and repairs?

Hilary: Prior to an interstate move, I was contemplating whether to re-start a new dressmaking business at my new address, plus I was also thinking of retirement at some future time. I looked at ways to offer my experience in a DIY situation.

I researched libraries, book stores, the internet, etc. I found countless publications offering "how to" do every aspect of clothing construction but absolutely nothing relating to altering/repairing existing clothing.

What are the three most requested repairs that people want to learn? Hilary:

1. Replacement of broken zippers,
2. Patching favourite jeans,
3. Repairing badly constructed garments.

What are the three most requested alterations that people want to learn? Hilary:

1. Taking in/letting out sideseams, darts, etc..
2. Changing the appearance of features that don't fit or aren't attractive,
3. Updating styles on favourite garments.

With clothing so inexpensive these days, what are the advantages of learning to alter and repair garments? Hilary: What you pay for is what you get. A cheap garment will never look or feel as good as a well made one. I am constantly advising U-Sew members how to alter their cheap garments to fit or look better. In other words; cheap garments usually need to be worked on to be improved, and quality garments occasionally need to be updated or repaired.

Do you have any tips for teaching children simple repairs such as replacing buttons or hems?

Hilary: Sorry, but I've never considered teaching sewing to children. My web site is aimed at those who can already do the basics. I didn't have daughters, only sons who still bring all their clothes to me for repairs. My teen age granddaughter is now studying garment construction so in time I may pass the family's sewing responsibilities onto her.

New Construction Windows Or Replacement Windows? Which Is Right For You?

Hello, my name is John Rocco.I grew up around the window and door business. My father owned a glass shop that dealt in every aspect of residential and commercial glass.Naturally, when it came time to choose a profession, i wound up in the window and door business.I have been in the business for about 27 years, and i have been self employed for 20.

One of the things that separated my company from my competitors was my willingness to show my customers how to replace their windows themselves. Whenever i would encounter a customer with a curiosity or willingness to learn how to install their own windows,i would offer to sell them the labor on one window,using them as my helper.Then,they would install the rest of the windows using the knowledge gained from helping me install one.Most window companies would never do this because there is so much money made on the labor.But i was always so busy,i never felt like it was costing me money.

Eventually, i made an installation video for those homeowners who wanted to do their own windows.While the video is for sale on my website, i decided to take excerpts from the video and write an article once a week covering some part of the window replacement project.This article is going to cover the difference between window frames used in new construction homes, and the window frames that are used to replace existing aluminum or wood windows.

When a new home is being built,the windows are nailed to the wood studs that make up the house frame.In order to accomplish this, new construction windows have a fin around all four sides of the frame that rests against the outside of the stud and nails are driven into the studs through the nailing fin. After that,flashing paper is applied to prevent water leaks,then the exterior material is applied. That material can be stucco, brick, siding, etc.

Now,imagine 10 or 20 years later when you want to replace those windows. If you were going to install your replacement windows the same way the original windows were installed, you would have to remove the exterior material around each window in order to get to those nails holding the frame in there. You can see how this procedure could cause many problems, not to mention all the labor involved. I have seen homes in california with stucco exteriors where the homeowner had the stucco cut out in order to remove the old windows.The problem was they were unable to match the stucco colors after patching. Its just not a very efficient way to replace windows. So the replacement frame was designed.

In most parts of the country it's simply a new construction window frame with the nail fin removed. In the west, where stucco is a common home exterior,a retrofit frame was designed. If you're going to be replacing the exterior material on your home, then you might want to consider going with the new construction window since the nailing fins will be exposed anyway. Also, chances are that a contractor will be doing your exterior replacement,and it would be wise to let the contractor install the windows as well.Since my installation videos deal with window replacement only, these articles will focus on replacement frames and retrofit frames. Using these two frame styles,a do it yourselfer can replace their old windows without any damage to existing interior and exterior surfaces. And the job can be done using common tools such as a drill,tape measure, and caulking gun.

Some of the manufacturers even provide a guarantee, that if a surge gets past their device they will be liable for the replacement of all damaged items.

As well, some of the whole house surge protectors provide connections for incoming cable TV and telephone lines.

If you live in an area that has frequent lightening strikes, poor utility voltage levels and brown outs, you should consider adding a whole house surge protection system to your electrical service.

Wallpaper Tips for Your Home Remodeling Jobs

Putting wallpaper on your walls is one of the easiest and quickest ways to completely change the mood and appearance of a room. Wallpaper comes in a wide variety of styles, textures, colors, and designs. Here is some things you need to know to select and buy the right wallpaper for the job.

First of all, you need to estimate how much wallpaper is going to be needed for the project at hand. So here is a general formula to help you find out. First measure the height and width that needs to be covered. Then be sure to add an extra 10 -- 15% to cover for waste. Once you have this number you can divide it by the square footage rating of whatever paper that you choose. That should give you the figure of how many rolls of wallpaper you are going to need.

Actually it's not a bad idea to add on a few that extra rolls too, especially if you have a complex pattern that requires it. And besides, you may need to make repairs in the future anyway, so having an extra roll or two available can come in very handy later on.

One warning to be aware of regarding wallpaper is that due to the production process, rolls that may appear to be similar in the store will not always look that way when you actually get them on the wall. That's why wallpaper rolls come in what is called dye lots that identify the rolls that actually match. So be sure as you go through and select your wallpaper, that you look for the rolls that all come from the same dye lot.

Most modern vinyl wallpapers already have paste on the back, so it's just a matter of soaking them in water and hanging them on the wall. However there are different kinds of papers that are available. Solid vinyl papers are the most common of all these days, as they are very durable, washable, and easy to hang. There are also other papers that are simply vinyl coated and so therefore are somewhat less durable but still fine for most uses.

More expensive papers include embossed paper that has a raised pattern on it, and it is also easy to hang. Some papers are made of grasscloth, and are especially useful for covering walls that have imperfections or are damaged.

Foil wallpaper is very expensive, although it can quickly brighten up and change a small room if used correctly. Some also like to use fabric wallpaper, but just keep in mind that it does not clean very well or easily, and it can be extremely difficult to hang.

Generally speaking, most wallpaper hangers find that working in a clockwise direction around the room is best for right handed people, and going counterclockwise works best for left-handed people. Wherever you start in the room is largely up to you, but try to select a major focal point to begin with.

Selecting and hanging wallpaper is well within the reach of most homeowners. So it is one of those home improvement projects that almost anyone can do with a little determination and practice. So why not give it a try in your home?
