Characteristics of an Internet Child Predator

Millions of children and teens are on the Internet everyday. They surf web pages, get their email and chat with their friends. Most parents believe this is harmless, except that our kids are being targeted everyday by predators on the Internet.

Lets explore some of the characteristics of a child predator. The average child predator is male and over the age of 25. He could be considered t2238he guy down the street who kept to himself. The loner type, very few friends and typically not married. A child predator most often has limited social skills, but a propensity to engage in conversation with an adolescent or child. This individual will tend to become shy with adults of his own age. He tends to seek out jobs that allow him to work around children, such as a baseball or basketball coach, Boy Scout leader, janitor or teacher at the school.

Child predators usually see nothing wrong with their behavior. Child predators come from all walks of life, some are rich, some are poor, some are educated and some are not. They usually have a sexually abusive or violent background histories. Child predators will target numerous children at one time. Their words are cunning and they take their time to groom their victims. Grooming is done by showering their victims with gifts, signs of affection and anything else they can, in order to build trust and a relationship with potential victims. Once trust is built, blackmail and guilt are sometimes used to get the child to succumb to their demands.

The Child Internet predator will utilize any or all of these techniques online. They will often times mask their age and state that they are around the same age as your child. They will stalk the Internet sites that most children and teens regularly visit. Hiding behind their computer screen, waiting patiently and then attacking their prey, our children.

How can you tell if your child is at risk? Your child may turn off the computer suddenly when you enter the room. Your child may be receiving gifts from others that you do not know. They may become more secretive about what they are doing online and usually spend more than an hour a day on the Internet. You may see long distance phone numbers that you do not recognize or they may receive phone calls from people that you are not familiar with. These are all signs that your child may be at risk.

As a parent, what can you do? One of the best ways to keep your child safe online is to create open dialogue with your child and to set clear rules regarding computer and Internet usage. You will also need to understand what your child is doing online. Learning more about how your child uses the Internet and whom they talk to in emails and instant message chat rooms can do this. Every now and then money can get a little tight in between paydays. You do work, and the money is coming, its just that payday is a week away. Something has come up and you are in need of some cash - but only till payday. This is where it could be real handy to get a short-term loan. Here is what you need to know about getting one for your needs.

Short-term loans also go by a number of other names, such as payday loans, cash advance, fast cash, and a few more. These loans enable you to get the cash you need in a very short time - sometimes in about an hour, but some places will take up to 24 hours.

All you need in order to get your short-term loan is being employed at the same place more than three months. In addition, you will need to make more than $1,000 each month. They will ask for the name and phone number of your employer, and may call for verification. In some cases, you may need to fax copies of some of your recent pay stubs to them as proof of your income. A bank statement may also be needed, too.

You will also need to be ready to give some pertinent checking account information. This is where you will get your money, which will be directly deposited into it. Also, the money will probably be withdrawn out of it on the day the loan becomes due. An alternative way of paying is that you pay the loan off in person at the loan office. This account will need to have been in existence also for about three months.

Short term loans, or payday loans, are required to be paid back in just a few days - usually your next payday. Your first loan from a payday loan office - or Web site will be small, probably less than $400. You also want to make sure that you pay it off on time, too, as this will help you to get payday loans in the future for more money. Not paying it will quickly get you into trouble and banned from future payday loans.

Be aware that these payday loans can have quite a high interest rate. This can range anywhere from about 15 all the way up to 30%. At this rate, you will want to shop around some so that you can find a good one. One nice thing that you will also want to look around for is that a number of payday loan providers will let you have the first one interest free.

Some payday loan lenders also have some differences in how long you will be given to pay the loan back, too. This is a newer feature, and not many do it yet. Some, though, will allow you to pay it back in three or four payments - instead of all at once. Because of the high amount of competition between the lenders, new features are slowly being added to make their loan product more desirable. By shopping around, you may be able to find even better deals.

Homeowners Look To Remortgage As A Means Of Debt Consolidation

More homeowners are remortgaging in an attempt to clear their debts, an industry expert has suggested.

According to Sue Anderson, head of member and external relations for the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML), consumers have often tended to take out a new loan with a different provider as a means of funding home improvement projects. However, an increasing number are now looking to remortgage so as to consolidate other debts or replace relatively expensive unsecured debt with a secured loan which attracts a more competitive rate of interest.

And with Britain becoming evermore indebted, she suggested that consolidating borrowing could well be a logical thing for many consumers as they look to prepare to manage their finances on a tighter budget in the future.

Ms Anderson said: If people are looking to release equity - which is not by any manner of means a silly thing to do and in many instances is a very sensible thing to do - repaying more expensive credit agreements with less expensive interest rates that are available on mortgages may well be a reasonable and very rational strategy for people, but people should think about how quickly they expect to repay that debt.

However, as mortgages are a very long-term commitment, the CML representative advised that consumers should take the time to consider whether they will be able to regularly make repayments. She added that they should also look to see if they will be able to make over-payments or repay elements of that to win in the long-term as well as the short-term.

Meanwhile, those considering switching lenders so as to get a more competitive rate of interest on their borrowing were advised to do so with caution. Ms Anderson suggested that instead of just focusing on the amount of monthly repayments, consumers need to take account of all fees and charges such as administration and legal costs. Consequently, borrowers were urged to take the time to shop around to ensure that they get the most competitively-priced product available and compare charges currently offered by their existing lenders with that of any prospective new suppliers.

However, it was pointed out that internally refinancing with current mortgage providers can also be a sufficiently attractive option for many consumers concerned about the impact of the recent rise in arrangement fees.

And although remortgaging can be an effective way of bringing together money owed to various creditors, those aiming to use this and any other form of debt consolidation loan are being advised to make sure that they do not incur any extra borrowing.

Earlier this year, a survey carried out by the Motley Fool revealed that some three-fifths of debt consolidation consumers get into the red once again in the future. David Kuo, head of personal finance for the company, claimed that although debt consolidation loans can act as a welcome lifeline for those struggling to handle their finances, borrowers should use such credit wisely and avoid the temptation of getting into monetary difficulties. In addition, the research revealed the average consolidation loan is 16,500 pounds, taking eight years to pay off.

How Does the Labor Compliance Program Work?

As expressed by the California labor and workforce development agency all construction projects funded by the Kindergarten-University Public Education Facilities Bond (Acts 2002 - 2004) are required to contain and comply with a labor compliance program. This compliance program became effective as of April 1, 2003.

You may now be thinking: 'Oh well, this is a lot of legal mombo-jombo', but the fact is that these laws were created for a reason. The labor compliance program also referred to as 'LCP' is required to make sure that all workers employed by either contractors or subcontractors be paid or compensated a state-determined prevailing wage. In other words, this program makes sure that workers who execute public work contracts are not being underpaid.

Another goal of this labor compliance program is to keep a competitive bidding process with complete integrity, which will filter monetary aid back into the local community through the public workers thus improving labor relations. The agency which is directly responsible for enforcing prevailing wage laws is the California Department of Industrial Relations also referred to as 'DIR', and even more specific, the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement also known as the 'DLSE' which is a subdivision of the 'DIR' is directly linked to this compliance program.

Furthermore, the work done by the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement has to comply and be consistent with the 8CC 16434 legislation which has provided a statutory system ever since 1989. This particular legislation also allows political subdivisions of the state which provide public work contracts to work and make sure everything is in order directly with the Department of industrial Relations and the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement.

This particular program also applies to school districts. Since funding, implementing and managing a permanent labor compliance program is quite an important and resource consuming task many of the school districts have decided to let a certified third party LCP handle such responsibilities.

Certified third party LCPs are required to handle several tasks during this process, such tasks are: communicating with construction workers and personnel in English and Spanish during on-site labor compliance inspections, keeping proper documentation of prevailing wage language during bid and contract arrangements, instructing and explaining labor compliance responsibilities to contractors and subcontractors during pre-construction convocations, auditing and ensuring the integrity of certified payroll records as well as making corrections if prevailing wage mistakes are found throughout such documents, ensuring and facilitating project completion within the time and budgets established.

As you now understand, keeping and maintaining labor compliance programs is a full time job which must be executed properly and carefully, that is why that not only school districts are outsourcing such responsibilities to certified third party LCPs; housing authorities, developers, contractors, local municipalities, redevelopment agencies and all other organizations which are subject to state regulated prevailing wage requirements, tend to outsource such tasks as well.

Keep Your Dog Safe In Hot Weather

Reading this article could save your dog's life. Summertime brings longer days, warmer temperatures and a need for safety. Whether you live in the far north, the deep south, the coast or the desert, the more you know about hot weather dog safety, the better.

For example, at temperatures of 50, 60 or even 70 degrees Fahrenheit (depending on humidity levels) leaving your dog in the car can turn into a fatality. Dog heat stroke happens fast. Many places have laws about leaving an animal unattended in a vehicle and the places that don't, should.

Think about it! If its 70 degrees, humidity is moderate (heat index is 80-85 degrees) but all the car windows are rolled up with a 1-3" opening, the car is in the direct sun, or even the shade, and you're leaving your dog in the car for more than 5 minutes. Could this be a problem? Maybe it's 80 or 90 degrees Fahrenheit (heat index of nearly 100 degrees) and you leave your dog in the car.

Take a moment and ask yourself, is this safe? Ask yourself if you would be safe left in the conditions you plan to leave your dog in. Would a baby be safe? If your answer is no, then your dog won't be safe either. Would a police officer, animal control officer, or veterinarian scold you or possibly ticket you for leaving your dog? If the answer is yes, then don't do it.

If you have any doubt about your dogs safety, listen to that and act accordingly. In the spring & summer months, dog heat exhaustion & heat stroke is the main concern. Believe me, watching a dog succumb due to heat exhaustion or stroke is heart breaking. They refuse water & food, are lethargic, breath rapidly, can't get up, are disoriented, vomit continually, have uncontrollable diarrhea, and slowly die.

To protect your dog from heat exhaustion and heat stroke, read the following:

*Don't leave you dog in the car unless you plan to leave the air conditioner running.

*Don't let your dog run in the middle of the day. Let your dog go for it in the early morning or at night when it's cooler.

*Keep in mind if you live in a highly humid/tropical climate, when it's 90 degrees and humidity is high, the heat index is typically over 100 degrees. Exercise your dog when humidity and the heat index is very low.

*Take stock if your dog has dark colored fur. They will get hot faster (black absorbs heat where white repels it).

*Be especially careful with short snouted dogs like pugs, bulldogs, mastiffs and shih tzu's. These breeds overheat much faster and are highly susceptible to dog heat stroke.

*Provide shade for your dog. Buy a tarp or a sheet and put it up if necessary. It's a lot cheaper than a vet bill.

*Always have fresh, clean water available for your dog. Dogs need hydration just like humans. Have a large plastic dish (metal gets hot) & leave your garden hose slightly running into the dish. A vet bill can be much higher than a water bill.

*No! An ice cold beer is not the answer on a hot summer day for your dog! Alcohol is poison for your dog. Give your dog lots of cold, clean water.

*Please don't tether your dog outside when it's hot. Dogs easily get the tether wrapped around various objects and end up in the sun. This is a recipe for dog heat stroke.

*Remember your dog doesn't wear shoes and asphalt, concrete, etc. get very hot in the summer sun. Burnt puppy pads are very painful and can become a serious issue quickly. Imagine walking barefoot on asphalt in the summer. Ouch! Walk your dog when it's cooler outside and preferably in shaded areas.

*When you're out & about with your dog, dont let your dog drink from stagnant water sources. These often have bacteria & mold that will make your dog very sick.

*Never, ever leave your dog unsupervised around a swimming pool. They can easily drown. If you have a pool, train your dog where the stairs are located so they know how to get out. Just like children, keep an eye on your dog, at all times, when they're in the pool area.

Immediately call your veterinarian or animal emergency center if any of the following occur with regard to your dog:

*Rapid breathing with an increased heart rate.

*Your dog has discolored gums--Dogs with heat stroke have dull gray or pink gums instead of the normal red-pink color.

*Your dog is disoriented--they are unaware of their environment.

*Your dog isn't listening or obeying commands, seems lost or scared.

*Your dog has a wild or panicked expression.

If you suspect your dog may have heat stroke, first call your veterinarian or animal emergency center. Secondly, to help bring your dogs temperature down, do the following:

*Gently place a cool wash cloth on the unhaired belly area. Keep rinsing the cloth with fresh cool water and applying until your dog is calmer (this should only take about 5 minutes).

This is not a substitute for getting your dog to the veterinarian or animal emergency center. Get them checked out. It could save their life.

With the temperatures rising all over, be aware & make adjustments when necessary to take the very best care of your dog. If you have questions or concerns, talk with your veterinarian or veterinary technician.

Sift through internet information, talk to brokers, well meaning friends, other investors and motivated sellers to find real investment opportunities wastes valuable time and money. Building permits issued- consisting of five or more units for apartment construction. (see city planning division for recent data check local library for resource records.)

Household income- indicates apartment value. As income rises, tenants ability to pay higher rents increases, eventually, affecting the value of property as net operating incomes (NOI) increase. Look for EBI or effective buying income statistic.

Employment- Look for employment data in County Business Patterns in the local library, or check the Chamber of Commerce resource statistics.

Number of Households- determine a more accurate number of renters than population. (see: Sales and Marketing Management from the local library for EBI number.)

Median Home Prices- available at the National Association of Realtors. If unavailable look for local historical data at the Chamber of Commerce.

Statistical data tools reveal market potential when you learn what to interpret from the numbers.

Apartment Feng Shui - Do You Know How it Works?

In feng shui, all homes are not created equal. This is especially true in apartments. Because apartments can range from free-standing buildings to a complex of individual buildings, this means their feng shui can be vastly different. It also means applying feng shui is also a bit trickier. But, with a few basic steps, you can apply feng shui to your apartment quickly and easily.

Apartment buildings. When you're living in an apartment building, there are two things to consider: 1) The entrance to the building; and 2) The entrance to the individual apartment. Because these types of apartments are all enclosed in one building, the entrance is very important. In this type of building, the entrance to your apartment building is primary. The entrance to your individual apartment is secondary. Because of this you will want to try to find a building that has an entrance that faces one of your best personal directions according to your kua number. If it doesn't don't fret. Just do your best to enhance your apartment as best you can using the lo shu square (see link at the top of the page).

Raised Buildings. These kinds of apartments are on stilts and often have parking below. This suggests an unstable footing. Because these apartments are not "grounded" they will not have good feng shui. Try to avoid these apartments.

Penthouses. If you are on the absolute top floor, this means you are vulnerable to attack. Penthouses are generally not deemed auspicious because of that vulnerability. Avoid these apartments as much as possible.

Pool. You should choose an apartment whose pool is on the garden grounds rather than on the roof. Pools on the roof of the hotel are deemed inauspicious because they represent water overhead.

**Windows & Balconies.** If your apartment has a large open veranda or balcony or big picture window, then you will use this as your facing direction, instead of the apartment building's entrance or the door to your apartment. So take your compass readings from the window versus the door.

Apartment Complexes. These apartments are made up of a number of buildings on a property. Each building may have two or more apartments. Generally, the buildings have entrances from the outside, or stairs outdoors. In this case, the determination should be made whether the door or other feature is the facing direction. If there is a large picture window, patio, or veranda, then this will be the facing direction. If not, then the door will be the facing direction.

Many of these kind of apartment complexes have stairways with open risers. This is troublesome for anyone on any floor other than the first. That's because it is difficult for chi to rise to the door. If this is the case, try to move to a bottom floor apartment or be sure to keep your light on an place a plant or hanging basket outside the door. This will help raise the chi to your upstairs apartment.

Studio Apartments. If you live in a studio apartment where all the living is done in one room (kitchen, living room, bed, etc.), then this poses an additional problem. If possible, try to demarcate the bedroom by hanging curtains or placing a divider between the bedroom and the rest of the apartment. Balancing a Ceiling Fan

While the advantages of installing ceiling fans throughout your home are numerous, most homeowners who use these attractive, energy saving appliances, usually experience a problem that is variously described as wobbling or lack of proper balance.

Consider the basic anatomy of the ceiling fan. Its a rotating set of blades that can usually be adjusted for the speed desired for proper cooling or heat circulation. As such, each blade must be angled the same and, most importantly, must weigh the same. The most frequent cause of ceiling fan wobbling is that one or more blades differ in weight.

A properly balanced fan rotates smoothly and provides the greatest efficiency of airflow. The culprit, when it comes to an unbalanced unit, is usually time and use. Like most everything mechanical, the ceiling fan is subject to efficiency problems after extensive use. When a fan is out of balance the motor works harder, reducing its efficiency and increasing electrical usage. In addition, unbalanced fans tend to be noisy and typically produce a cyclical sound that can be quite irritating when youre trying to sleep or carry on a conversation.

Fortunately, correcting the problem is usually a fairly simple, inexpensive and straightforward proposition.

The first thing to check is the attachment of each blade to its respective holder. Ceiling fan blades are attached with screws (usually three) and the problem may be as simple as tightening any of the screws that have come loose over time. If you find this to be the case, after tightening the loose screws, run the fan and see if the problem has been solved.

If not, the next thing to try is switching blades that are across from each other. After switching one set, turn the fan on and see if the wobbling has stopped. If not, follow the same procedure with another set to see if this solves the problem.

If not, the next thing to check is the angle or alignment of each blade. Use a piece of wood or a yardstick and place it vertically on the outside edge of one of the blades. Manually rotate the blades slowly to make sure that each blade is in alignment. If you notice any blades that are not, carefully bend them up or down until they are in alignment with the other blades. Turn the fan on and see if this solves the problem.

If the problem persists, you have a problem with one or more of the blade weights. Many ceiling fans come with weights that attach to the top of a blade. These are called balancing weights and are used to compensate for differences in blade weights that can occur particularly with wooden blades. Sometimes one of these weights can be accidentally knocked off when the blades are cleaned. If your fan was not supplied with balancing weights, they can be purchased, usually as a kit, in either lighting fixture stores, home centers or in some hardware stores.

These kits are inexpensive and will usually stop the wobbling when the other suggested remedies have failed. Put a balancing weight on one of the blades and then spin the fan by hand. Do this with each blade until you have determined which blade is out of balance. You may find that more than one blade will need a balancing weight.

Move the weight(s) close to the motor and turn the fan on. If there is still a wobble, stop the fan and move the weight(s) further from the motor. As the weight is moved further from the motor, the effect of the weight increases. Continue to experiment until the weight(s) are positioned in such a way that the wobble stops.

Although this process is somewhat time consuming, it will take care of the problem when all else fails. With your ceiling fan back in balance, it will run smoothly and efficiently providing a pleasant cooling effect in the hot summer months and circulating warm air in the cold winter months.

How Does the Labor Compliance Program Work?

As expressed by the California labor and workforce development agency all construction projects funded by the Kindergarten-University Public Education Facilities Bond (Acts 2002 - 2004) are required to contain and comply with a labor compliance program. This compliance program became effective as of April 1, 2003.

You may now be thinking: 'Oh well, this is a lot of legal mombo-jombo', but the fact is that these laws were created for a reason. The labor compliance program also referred to as 'LCP' is required to make sure that all workers employed by either contractors or subcontractors be paid or compensated a state-determined prevailing wage. In other words, this program makes sure that workers who execute public work contracts are not being underpaid.

Another goal of this labor compliance program is to keep a competitive bidding process with complete integrity, which will filter monetary aid back into the local community through the public workers thus improving labor relations. The agency which is directly responsible for enforcing prevailing wage laws is the California Department of Industrial Relations also referred to as 'DIR', and even more specific, the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement also known as the 'DLSE' which is a subdivision of the 'DIR' is directly linked to this compliance program.

Furthermore, the work done by the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement has to comply and be consistent with the 8CC 16434 legislation which has provided a statutory system ever since 1989. This particular legislation also allows political subdivisions of the state which provide public work contracts to work and make sure everything is in order directly with the Department of industrial Relations and the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement.

This particular program also applies to school districts. Since funding, implementing and managing a permanent labor compliance program is quite an important and resource consuming task many of the school districts have decided to let a certified third party LCP handle such responsibilities.

Certified third party LCPs are required to handle several tasks during this process, such tasks are: communicating with construction workers and personnel in English and Spanish during on-site labor compliance inspections, keeping proper documentation of prevailing wage language during bid and contract arrangements, instructing and explaining labor compliance responsibilities to contractors and subcontractors during pre-construction convocations, auditing and ensuring the integrity of certified payroll records as well as making corrections if prevailing wage mistakes are found throughout such documents, ensuring and facilitating project completion within the time and budgets established.

As you now understand, keeping and maintaining labor compliance programs is a full time job which must be executed properly and carefully, that is why that not only school districts are outsourcing such responsibilities to certified third party LCPs; housing authorities, developers, contractors, local municipalities, redevelopment agencies and all other organizations which are subject to state regulated prevailing wage requirements, tend to outsource such tasks as well.

Finishing A Basement

Finishing basement space is one way to add living expense relatively economically. The box structure of floor, walls, and ceiling is already in place; all you have to do is add the finishes.

One of the keys to keeping the cost down is to properly plan out the basement renovation and to the various items that need to be accomplished in a specific sequence in order to avoid having to rework items already done.

The first priority is to define the space. By that, I mean; is it a complete set of living quarters with a kitchen, bathroom, sitting area and bedroom; or is it a large family room with an entertainment system; or maybe it will be a room to house the ping-pong or billiards table.

Once you determine the what, you have to determine the how. Many of the how questions, will be based on your geographic location.

Considerations:

  • Heating: How will you heat and/or cool the basement areas? There are numerous choices, forced air, electric (radiant, baseboard), hot water (radiators, radiant), and using a fireplace. If the room is not completely below ground, an in wall HVAC unit could be utilized. If there is a bathroom, it could be heated with heat lamps. If you are planning on using a current forced air system or a current hot water heating systems, does it have the capacity to heat and/or cool the additional space?
  • Plumbing: If there is a to be a bathroom and/or kitchen you will have to install drains and water supply lines. Is the current hot water tank or system capable of the increased demands? If not, you will have to replace the current tank or install another tank or use a tankless system.
  • Ventilation: Bathrooms and kitchens require ventilation and will require make-up air for those ventilation systems. Fireplaces also require make-up air.
  • Safety: Smoke alarms should be installed, especially if there are bedrooms.
  • Electrical: At minimum, you will require receptacles on walls and some method lighting the new space. Electric stoves and ovens, heating and hot water will make serious demands on your current electrical service, can it handle the increased load. Will you need a sub-panel to handle the additional circuits or is their space in the current panel?
  • Dampness: One of the prime distracters for finishing a basement is that most of them are damp. Damp can generally be taken care of relatively easily with vapor barriers and insulation. However, visible water on walls or the floor could require a major undertaking to correct.

Construction Process:

  1. Take care of any water problems in the basement, walls, and floors. If there are windows, and they are going to remain as they are, make sure the frames are sealed for water ingress against the block or concrete walls.
  2. Replace or modify any major items such as HVAC main system units and perform the upgrade on the electrical service if required.
  3. Install any drainage for toilets and/or sinks if it means running the drains under the current concrete floor. This is also the time to install any electrical boxes with conduit for floor receptacles for power, cable TV, or telephone. Repair any concrete damage.
  4. If you are installing a fireplace, the fireplace hearth and flue should be installed next. If it is a wood burning stove that does not require a hearth you should add the flue at this point so that it protrudes through the wall or ceiling at a length sufficiently long enough to be able to connect to after the wall or ceilings are finished.

  5. Install any ductwork for ventilation and HVAC if required.
  6. If a bathtub, or stall shower is to be installed this is when it should be done (some plumbing for hot and cold water supplies may have to be done at this point. Only do what is necessary to bring the water lines outside of any unreachable area).
  7. If you are installing a sub-floor and vapor barrier, it should be done at this stage.
  8. Frame all wood or steel studs along walls and construct any room dividers needed.
  9. Install all drain lines and water supply lines that run in the walls and ceilings, dont forget water lines for ice makers if required.
  10. Install all ceiling and wall ventilation units with the exception of kitchen exhaust hoods, which would be installed after the installation of the kitchen cabinets.
  11. If the ceiling will require strapping, install it at this stage.
  12. Install receptacle, switch and light boxes and run all wiring from the electrical panel to those boxes as appropriate, electrical heaters and kitchen appliances if required. Also, run all wiring for cable TV, computers, speakers, or other entertainment devices.
  13. Install all insulation in walls and/or ceilings followed by a vapor barrier.
  14. Install the wall and ceiling finish material, drywall, wood paneling, or other. Tape and sand drywall. (If you are installing a suspended ceiling, tape, sand, and paint the drywall on the walls before hanging the suspended ceiling).
  15. Do all painting to final finished coat.
  16. Install the flooring (I prefer to install kitchen base cabinets and bathroom vanities on top of flooring in order to maintain counter heights).
  17. Install all bathroom fixtures, including vanities and kitchen cabinets, base and wall units.
  18. Install all door trims baseboards, other moldings, and doors (if you are moving large items into the area you can remove the doors by popping the bolts after installation). Paint these items before installing and do touch-up after installation.
  19. Install ceiling and wall sconce lights, smoke detectors, do trim out on electrical boxes and ventilation grills.
  20. Install wood burning stove if appropriate.
  21. Move in furniture and appliances.

Take a look at Greg Norman's Secret. If you watch the infomercial, you might pick up the fact that your right wrist shouldn't be moving much at all. It's movement is fixed. The stationary piece of plastic won't allow any back and forth movement of the hand, only a slight raising of the thumb towards the wrist. Greg even tells you that the wrist cock is like shaking hands with someone. I want you to take this feeling with you. Try to keep the 'V' of your right thumb and forefinger pointed at your right shoulder all the way through the swing. This feeling will allow your wrists to hinge naturally.

Then there's the Medicus. It doesn't matter if you want to talk about the iron or the driver. That shouldn't matter much to you. What you need to pick up on is how the hinge is oriented to the club face. The hinge is facing the same way as face of the club. So if you were to break your wrist backwards on itself, wouldn't the hinge on the Medicus also break. The only way to take the club back without making the hinge break is to cock the wrist upwards. Watch the Medicus infomercial sometime and try to pick out the feeling that you are trying to achieve with this training aid.

The next time that you're watching The Golf Channel and you see an infomercial from one of the golf training aids mentioned, take the time to really watch it. Study what it is about the training aid that is helping golfers improve. Are you feeling the same thing that the training aid is trying to teach? Homeowners Look To Remortgage As A Means Of Debt Consolidation

More homeowners are remortgaging in an attempt to clear their debts, an industry expert has suggested.

According to Sue Anderson, head of member and external relations for the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML), consumers have often tended to take out a new loan with a different provider as a means of funding home improvement projects. However, an increasing number are now looking to remortgage so as to consolidate other debts or replace relatively expensive unsecured debt with a secured loan which attracts a more competitive rate of interest.

And with Britain becoming evermore indebted, she suggested that consolidating borrowing could well be a logical thing for many consumers as they look to prepare to manage their finances on a tighter budget in the future.

Ms Anderson said: If people are looking to release equity - which is not by any manner of means a silly thing to do and in many instances is a very sensible thing to do - repaying more expensive credit agreements with less expensive interest rates that are available on mortgages may well be a reasonable and very rational strategy for people, but people should think about how quickly they expect to repay that debt.

However, as mortgages are a very long-term commitment, the CML representative advised that consumers should take the time to consider whether they will be able to regularly make repayments. She added that they should also look to see if they will be able to make over-payments or repay elements of that to win in the long-term as well as the short-term.

Meanwhile, those considering switching lenders so as to get a more competitive rate of interest on their borrowing were advised to do so with caution. Ms Anderson suggested that instead of just focusing on the amount of monthly repayments, consumers need to take account of all fees and charges such as administration and legal costs. Consequently, borrowers were urged to take the time to shop around to ensure that they get the most competitively-priced product available and compare charges currently offered by their existing lenders with that of any prospective new suppliers.

However, it was pointed out that internally refinancing with current mortgage providers can also be a sufficiently attractive option for many consumers concerned about the impact of the recent rise in arrangement fees.

And although remortgaging can be an effective way of bringing together money owed to various creditors, those aiming to use this and any other form of debt consolidation loan are being advised to make sure that they do not incur any extra borrowing.

Earlier this year, a survey carried out by the Motley Fool revealed that some three-fifths of debt consolidation consumers get into the red once again in the future. David Kuo, head of personal finance for the company, claimed that although debt consolidation loans can act as a welcome lifeline for those struggling to handle their finances, borrowers should use such credit wisely and avoid the temptation of getting into monetary difficulties. In addition, the research revealed the average consolidation loan is 16,500 pounds, taking eight years to pay off.

The History of the Fireplace

Mans use of fire can be traced as far back as one million years ago. The fires then were built on the ground. While the ancient people were inside their huts, smoke accidentally escaped through holes in the roof. Approximately half a million years ago, fires were already built on a solid hearth and holes were deliberately made in the roof so smoke could exit.

Fires were traditionally placed in the middle of the room to allow maximum accessibility and heat output. The advancement of the first two-storey buildings led to the fireplace being relegated to the outside wall. The only material available then for building the floor of the second storey was wood. Obviously, it was unwise to build a fire on a wooden floor, so the fireplace was moved into a cut-out in the wall. The flue was placed horizontally so extraction of smoke was poor. Smoke would frequently have blown into the room. In the end, they discovered the principle of the chimney.

The means of using wood to heat homes and offices is almost as old as dirt. It can be traced back to the 1700s when Abraham Darby used procedures of smelting, where it was found out that iron provided a cost-efficient way of producing heat.

It was during the Victorian age when fireplaces began to grow popular. During this time, people discovered that aside from producing heat, fireplaces added a hint of elegance. It somehow gave homes a comfortable and traditional environment. Through the years, housing designs evolved and so did the fireplaces, along with the technology. Fireplaces changed and became more fashionable, offering sand casting systems. This provided a chance for makers to create even more superior designs.

Benjamin Franklin had an important part in the discovery of fireplaces. He found out that fireplaces lose a significant amount of heat through the wall. It gave him the idea to make the first freestanding firebox, which came to be recognized as the Franklin stove. The outcome of the experiment was that the whole room was heated completely and equally. New Construction Windows

Hello, my name is John Rocco.I grew up around the window and door business. My father owned a glass shop that dealt in every aspect of residential and commercial glass.Naturally, when it came time to choose a profession, i wound up in the window and door business.I have been in the business for about 27 years, and i have been self employed for 20.

One of the things that separated my company from my competitors was my willingness to show my customers how to replace their windows themselves. Whenever i would encounter a customer with a curiosity or willingness to learn how to install their own windows,i would offer to sell them the labor on one window,using them as my helper.Then,they would install the rest of the windows using the knowledge gained from helping me install one.Most window companies would never do this because there is so much money made on the labor.But i was always so busy,i never felt like it was costing me money.

Eventually, i made an installation video for those homeowners who wanted to do their own windows.While the video is for sale on my website, i decided to take excerpts from the video and write an article once a week covering some part of the window replacement project.This article is going to cover the difference between window frames used in new construction homes, and the window frames that are used to replace existing aluminum or wood windows.

When a new home is being built,the windows are nailed to the wood studs that make up the house frame.In order to accomplish this, new construction windows have a fin around all four sides of the frame that rests against the outside of the stud and nails are driven into the studs through the nailing fin. After that,flashing paper is applied to prevent water leaks,then the exterior material is applied. That material can be stucco, brick, siding, etc.

Now,imagine 10 or 20 years later when you want to replace those windows. If you were going to install your replacement windows the same way the original windows were installed, you would have to remove the exterior material around each window in order to get to those nails holding the frame in there. You can see how this procedure could cause many problems, not to mention all the labor involved. I have seen homes in california with stucco exteriors where the homeowner had the stucco cut out in order to remove the old windows.The problem was they were unable to match the stucco colors after patching. Its just not a very efficient way to replace windows. So the replacement frame was designed.

In most parts of the country it's simply a new construction window frame with the nail fin removed. In the west, where stucco is a common home exterior,a retrofit frame was designed. If you're going to be replacing the exterior material on your home, then you might want to consider going with the new construction window since the nailing fins will be exposed anyway. Also, chances are that a contractor will be doing your exterior replacement,and it would be wise to let the contractor install the windows as well.Since my installation videos deal with window replacement only, these articles will focus on replacement frames and retrofit frames. Using these two frame styles,a do it yourselfer can replace their old windows without any damage to existing interior and exterior surfaces. And the job can be done using common tools such as a drill,tape measure, and caulking gun.

Remodeling Porches

Fixing up a porch is a great idea that will extend the use of your home considerably. Using just some paint, stain and basic carpentry skills, you can make your porch a pleasure to spend time on.

An example shown on DoItYourself.com shows a couple from Georgia who wanted enjoy their extended warm seasons of spring, summer and fall, but avoid the problems of mosquitoes and decided to take their slab concrete patio and make it into a screened in area they could enjoy almost all year long.

The patio was just concrete square under a roof overhang. They wanted the porch to blend in with the home, as well as protect the family from the heat, humidity and insects of the Georgia summers. The concrete slab declined slightly to allow for runoff, so there had to be some adjustments made to accommodate this feature.

Here is their step by step solution:

Step One. Cut pre-primed 4X8 sheets of beadboard ceiling paneling.

Step Two. Install the celing paneling and the ceiling fan. They used a nail gun to make the installation of the ceiling panels faster and easier than trying to swing a hammer upward. Before all of the panelling was installed, the ceiling was wired for the fan and light. This will allow the porch to remain cool and the light will allow the room to be used at night. This was a two person job, with one person holding the fan and the other connecting the wires and screwing the fan in place. The finish trim hid the seams in the paneling.

Step Three. Frame out the porch. Using 2X4 boards, they spaced them to allow for standard width screen to be installed. The crosspieces were nailed directly through the vertical braces.

Step Four. Install the interior panelling. Pine and plywood bead board paneling was secured by staple gun. These had to be trimmed along the bottom to accommodate the uneven floor.

Step Five. Install and level the exterior paneling. The harbor ad exterior panels wear put into place, from the bottom up. The first one had to be custom cut to allow for the uneven ground line and then the rest followed. These panels were painted to match the existing exterior of the house, so there was a lot of trial and error to match the aged yellow paint exactly. But weather resistant exterior paint was used so that it can be easily kept clean by rinsing Wit soap and water.

Step Six. Do the screening. Vinyl grids had to be screwed directly into the wooden frames. Then the screens were attached to the channels in the grids, so the fiberglass or aluminum screens could be slid in without using staples. When the screens were rolled into the grids with a spline, the extra screening material was cut off. With a mallet, the caps over the vinyl channels were banged into place.

Pressure Treated Lumber

If you are building a deck, retaining wall or a swing set for the kids it is highly likely that your material of choice is pressure treated lumber.

Pressure treated lumber, if installed properly, should provide a 40 year useable life. However, there are some things about pressure treated lumber that you have to know, in order to obtain that life and not have your project fall apart in a few years.

To create pressure treated lumber, raw lumber is impregnated with two waterborne compounds that are copper based chemicals. The amount of copper basically determines the usage and all pressure treated lumber, sold in the US, is supposed to have a tag stapled to the end of the board signifying its pounds of preservative per cubic foot of wood product:

0.25 Above Ground

0.40 Ground Contact

0.60 Permanent Wood Foundation

2.50 Salt Water

Because the lumber is impregnated with Copper, the choice of fasteners becomes very important. When two dissimilar metals come in contact with one another a galvanic reaction is created, the outcome is that the materials corrode and disintegrate. The higher the levels of copper in the lumber the faster that the corrosion will occur.

Although most people realize that they must use corrosion resistant fasteners and connectors many do not consider items such as flashings and light poles that are also in contact with the pressure treated lumber. Of course the best metals to use for fasteners, flashings and anything else that comes in contact with the deck is stainless steel or copper whenever possible. Stainless steel is expensive and copper is not conveniently available at your local lumber supply so the next best material is steel that has been galvanized.

Galvanized fasteners come in different grades (the thickness of the coating), better manufactures mark the box with a G rating. The higher the G rating, the more zinc used. You shouldnt use less than a G-90 rating and engineers are now suggesting the use of G-185. If the box is not marked it is probably a G-60 or less and this will not provide enough zinc coating to prevent galvanization from occurring. Cadmium plated nuts, bolts and screws do not provide any protection from corrosion whatsoever.

Some manufactures have created composite coatings for use with pressure treated lumber. Read the label on the box and make sure that what you are buying is suitable for the job.

Do not use aluminum flashing, deck flashing must be stainless steel, galvanized or copper. Aluminum corrodes very quickly when in contact with copper. This also means that metals items that come in contact with the pressure treated lumber must also be protected, items such as outdoor furniture, and barbeques should have rubber or vinyl feet or wheels.

Cool Off Your Attic with Radiant Barrier

It is starting to get cooler outside, so now is the perfect time to talk about making your attic cooler all year long. How would you like to lower your attic temperature by 20 degrees in the summertime? This could be 30 degrees in the southern U.S.

Whether youre building a new home or have an existing home, Im going to tell you the benefits of an attic radiant barrier.

Let me ask you three questions.

1. In the summer, what is the hottest part of your house?

2. Where is your ductwork located? Attic or crawlspace?

3. Why would you put it in the attic?? (For 90% of you its in the attic, right?)

When consulting on new home construction we advise people not to put the ductwork in the attic. You can lower your cooling loads by as much as 20% just by getting the ductwork out of the attic. Now I know that isnt always possible so we recommend placing the ductwork directly on the ceiling joists and covering it with cellulose insulation. This along with an attic radiant barrier makes for a pretty efficient heating and cooling system.

For existing home construction we advise using an attic radiant barrier that either staples to the bottom of rafters or covers your attic insulation like a blanket.

Using attic radiant barriers is not a new concept. It has been around since 1960. In 1999 Doug Rye decided to use TechShield radiant barrier roof decking on a model home. The builder has his doubts but Doug insisted on using TechShield. After it was installed, the builder was sold on it. It was summertime and he found that it was much cooler working inside the unfinished house once the radiant barrier was installed than it was outside.

Since then we have heard story after story of how radiant barrier lowers the temperature of a house during construction. Weve heard stories from framers where they would rather eat lunch inside the house because its cooler than outside. Even the framers working next door eat lunch with them because its cooler.

The radiant barrier roof decking product is made using a process that laminates a thin, yet durable, sheet of aluminum foil to the surface of OSB board. When the sun strikes a roof, the radiant energy from the sun heats the roof and that heat radiates into the attic.

50%-75% - Radiant Heat Loss

Radiant barrier prevents up to 97 percent of that radiant heat in the roof from radiating in to the attic. As a result, it can lower the attic temperature by 30 degrees. And in the southern U.S. where temperatures easily reach 95 degrees and above, thats a huge difference!

For years, weve been telling homeowners not to put the ductwork in the attic and thats still good advice. But if your ductwork is in the attic, I recommend installing an attic radiant barrier which is available at most home centers.

By reducing temperatures in the attic, you are taking a lot of heat off the ductwork, which means your air conditioner wont have to work as hard and youll save money on your electric bill. And, of course, you also need plenty of cellulose insulation in the attic to keep the heat from radiating into the living areas of the home. Ill cover cellulose insulation in a future issue.

The most common concern people have regarding attic radiant barrier has to do with the temperature of the shingles of the roof. They want to know if it will damage the roof shingles by allowing them to get too hot. Well, the answer is no.

Attic radiant barrier won't melt the shingles. A study in Florida measured the temperatures of roof shingles above radiant barriers and found that the peak temperatures are only 2 to 5 degrees higher than the temperature of shingles on roofs without radiant barriers.

For existing home construction a thin, light weight radiant barrier can be installed. This radiant barrier is either stapled to the underside of the rafters or is laid over the ceiling insulation. This radiant barrier is clean, easy to handle, and requires no special tools or clothing.

A radiant barrier is available at most home improvement centers for around 60 cents per square foot.
